A group of keen crafters who are also Craft Volunteers at the National Wool Museum in Dre-fach Felindre have donated the fruits of their labour to the Special Care Baby Unit in Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen.

The dedicated group took on the challenge of creating Batman, Bluey and Peppa Pig hand crafted cushions, and then visited Glangwili to donate them to the family room on the ward. The talented group of craft volunteers spent a total of 75 hours on completing all three cushions, including designing them, and used it as not only a way to demonstrate their craft but to enrich the visitor experience of those at the National Wool Museum.

Amanda Furse, one of the volunteers behind the project said:

“We volunteer as Crafters on Thursdays at the Wool Museum. We used the opportunity to work together on designing and making three cushions depicting Peppa Pig, Bluey and Lego Batman who were visiting the Museum in the summer for family events.

Making the cushions was a great way for us to work together on a joint project. We used a punch needle technique with different coloured wool which creates loops to complete the image. The majority of this time was spent whilst volunteering at the Museum and were able to show visitors the work in progress.”

The project, which was done in partnership with Menter Iaith Gorllewin Sir Gâr, is one of many community projects run at the museum.

Kate Evans, Senior Learning & Engagement Officer at the National Wool Museum said:

“Community is at the heart of the Museum and we were all in agreement that the cushions should be donated to a worthwhile cause. We decided to donate the cushions to Glangwili SCBU family room which was particularly special for me because I have a personal experience of being supported by the Unit. In 2022, my son, Sam, was born at 27 weeks at Glangwili. After spending weeks in NICU at Bristol Southmead Hospital, he returned home and was looked after by the Team at Glangwili. Neither I nor my family will ever forget the care and kindness shown to Sam and all of us. We will be forever grateful to all the Team.

We hope that the cushions will be a valuable asset to the SCBU family room and bring a smile to families who are being supported there.”

A spokesperson on behalf of Menter Iaith Gorllewin Sir Gâr said:

“The fenter is very proud of the partnership between ourselves and the National Wool Museum and it has been great working together again on events over the summer. As part of these event the craft club created these wonderful cushions which we are delighted to see being donated to the SCBU ward in Glangwili Hospital to support local families.”

Staff and volunteers visited the SCBU ward at Glangwili Hospital on December 2 to donate the cushions to the family room on the ward.
